The shops are full of people buying turkey, Christmas crackers and mince pies. Here at Woodland Sprites we like to be different. On our shopping list this week? Beefburgers, sweetcorn, bananas and marshmallows! Normally these shopping items would suggest a summer barbecue with friends, enjoying a beautiful summer evening in late August. But why limit barbecues to the short summer months? Traditionally we have organised a cookout, a winter barbecue, to celebrate Christmas and this year was no different.
Ten intrepid adventurers set off to our woods on a beautiful crisp winter afternoon in temperatures just below freezing! The smell of barbecues drifted from the woods as we enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and a biscuit. Soon beefburgers and sweetcorn were sizzling away and, before you knew it, we were tucking into our lunch around a roaring campfire.
Now a roaring campfire should always be put to good use, so the girls were soon stuffing bananas full of chocolate buttons and wrapping them in foil – bananas in pyjamas were ready. While they cooked the girls enjoyed climbing trees, playing hide and seek and shelter building around the woods, a good opportunity to warm up cold hands and feet!
There is always great excitement when you unwrap the cooked bananas and the smell of melted chocolate never disappoints! The campfire was beginning to die but there was still enough heat to toast marshmallows for our final course, smores. A three course winter barbecue in sub zero temperatures. Merry Christmas everyone.
