We ran a one day first aid course towards the end of the Easter holidays. Over two days we taught sixteen children how to keep safe, help save lives and deal with emergencies.
Our course is based upon The British Red Cross ‘Life.Live It’ programme and includes games , quizzes and information sheets. We have added some work on simple bandaging.
The children picked up the basics quickly and were soon having fun in the gym applying dressings and learning how to do a sling. After lunch we learnt how put an unconscious person into the recovery position and found that once you have learnt the technique you could even roll an adult over!
For the last session of the day the children became either a first aider or a casualty. The casualties were briefed about their injuries and there was some very realistic acting on show! Cries of ‘Is there any danger?’ filled the room as the first aiders arrived and dealt with the emergency. The children all agreed that this session was definitely the most enjoyable.
At the end of the day every child received a certificate and a badge. We are hoping to repeat our first aid course again and are also investigating first aid courses for younger children as well as another course for the older age group which teaches more advanced first aid.
